Notes for George Henry GARROULD
George Henry Garrould was born in Wissett on 10th May 1818 and christened at Halesworth on 31st August 1818. He was the son of William Garrould (1776) and Maria. He was a shoemaker and possibly an apprentice or workmate of George Howell of Sweffling. He married Rachel Howell, the daughter of George and Phebe Howell, on 25th December 1839 at Sweffling Parish Church. He was resident in Halesworth at the time of his wedding. In 1841 he was working as a shoemaker and living in Reynold's Yard, Halesworth. The Garroulds then lived in Chediston Street, Halesworth, where Rachel died in 1866. George and his family are listed as living there in Halesworth in 1851 and he is listed as a master shoemaker. In 1861, George was living in Chediston Street and was described as employing 1 man. George married Eliza Burwick in Norwich in 1868. He was described as a shoemaker in 1869, 1871 and 1874, with a boot and shoe making business in Thoroughfare, Halesworth. He is listed at this address in the 1881 census and in various directories from 1868 to 1885. In 1891 he was living in Halesworth Road, Blyford, with Eliza and his widowed sister Louisa. He died from pneumonia in Quay Street, Halesworth on 15th January 1898 and was buried on 19th January in the Nonconformist section of Halesworth cemetery. On his death he left £580.14.s.7d to Alfred Foreman, grocer, and Horace Garrould, shoemaker.
