Notes for Horace George Broughton
Horace George Broughton was born in 1873 in Beccles and was the son of Raymond Broughton (1842) and Louisa Garrould. In 1881 he was living in New Road, Beccles. In 1891 he was working as a blacksmith. In 1901 he was boarding at the house of Mrs. Triphena Rose at 3 Lakenham Cottage, Beach Street in Pakefield. He was a boiler maker. Sometime after 1912, after the death of William Arthur Rose, Triphena’s husband, he married Triphena, whose maiden name was Knights. Horace served for some years in South Africa, as his WW1 Pension Record testifies. He was discharged at Bordon in Hampshire on 27th October 1917. He was described as being 44 years of age, five feet six and a half inches tall, of fresh complexion with hazel eyes and grey hair. “He is a boilermaker by trade and highly recommended for employment”. His intended place of residence - crossed out - was given as 12 Ethel Terrace, Kirkley, Lowestoft, but replaced with the Bear & Bells Inn, Beccles. He appears to have served in the Boer War of 1902 and in the Natal Rebellion of 1906. At the time of his discharge - as medically unfit with chronic Otitis Media (inflammation of the inner ear) - he had served as Sapper X499 in the South African Railway Section of the Royal Engineers. He appears to have joined the regiment on 8th April 1917 at Potchefstroom in North-West province of South Africa. At the time of his discharge his wife’s name was given as Mrs. Triphena Broughton, and her address as Box 98, Langlaagte, Johannesburg. The pension papers state that Horace claimed to have served in both the Royal Navy and in the Norfolk Regiment - nearly 18 years - but had lost his discharge papers. He died in 1953 and was buried in Kirkley Cemetery. In the records of the United Grand Lodge of England Freemason membership records, he is listed as having entered the Beccles Apollo Lodge no. 305 in 1920, and was an inn keeper in Beccles.
