Notes for John BROUGHTON
John Broughton was born on 27th November 1809 and baptised at St. Michael's in Plumstead on 3rd December. He was the son of John Broughton (1768) and Ann Bugg. He was trained as a blacksmith, probably by his elder brother Robert in Edgefield, and John gave his birthplace as both Edgefield and Plumstead in census returns. He was working in the forge of brother-in-law William Remmington in Frettenham in the 1830s. In April 1837, he moved to Spixworth, north of Norwich, to the forge of John Coe. John married the blacksmith's daughter, Mary Catherine Coe, at Spixworth church on 9th July 1838. It is thought that a relation of John Coe - married to a William Broughton - lived in Edgefield. Hence the connection of Edgefield to Spixworth. In 1841, John was living at the forge "near the church" in Spixworth with his wife, first child and in-laws. John Coe was listed as the head of household and John as his son-in-law. In 1851, the forge had moved to Lone Barn, south of the village proper and John was now the head of the household. The Coes died in 1852 and the Broughton family moved to Norwich some time after that. In 1861, John Broughton, his wife and Lemuel and Salome, were living in North Infirmary Road in Norwich St. Clement. He was listed as a labourer. In 1871, He had moved to Long Row in Norwich and he was listed as a general smith. He was widowed in 1874 and living in Waterloo, Coslany, Norwich, where he was described as a labourer. John probably married a woman called Augusta Bailey in Norwich in 1877. The 1881 census lists a John and Augusta Broughton in Stafford Terrace, Church Street, Norwich - he was described as being a blacksmith and born in Plumstead. In 1891 he was living in Silver Street in Norwich, and was described as a blacksmith born in Blofield and aged 63 - almost as if he was trying to obscure his origins! He died on 22nd January 1893 at 5 Silver Street in Norwich, and his son Lemuel was present on his deathbed. His age on the death certificate was given as 80, but he was probably 83, and he died of cardiac failure caused by bronchitis.
