Notes for James Hurst
James Hurst was born in 1860 in Westhoughton and was the son of Thomas Hurst (1819) and Ann Green. He married Fanny Ainscough (1867), the daughter of Ralph Ainscough and Ellen Booth in 1885. In 1901 he was living at 11 Manchester Road, Westhoughton, and was working as a Coal Hewer. He died from carbon monoxide poisoning in the Pretoria Pit disaster of 21st December 1910. His body was found in the South Plodder area of the pit on 26th December and identified by his wife. James was buried at St. John, Wingates, near Westhoughton. Relations of James also killed in the pit disaster include his brother Thomas, brother-in-law John Tyldesley, and nephews John Tyldesley Junior, Joseph Tyldesley, Thomas Hurst Tyldesley and William Tyldesley.
