William Holding was born in Hindley in 1867 and was the son of William Holding (1837) and Mary. In 1871 he was living in Ladies Lane, Hindley. In 1881 he was living at Alexandria House, Nottingham Road, Stapleford, Notts, where his father was a colliery manager. He married a woman called Annie around 1887 and, in 1891, was the assistant under manager of a coal mine and living at 16 Taylor Street in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. In 1911 he was the proprietor of the Prospect Hotel, Prospect Hill in Douglas, I.O.M.
