John Ainscough was born in 1874 in Aspull and was the illegitimate son of Jane Ainscough (1848), daughter of John Ainscough (1810). In 1881 he was living with his mother and stepfather, Robert Halliwell, at 3 Lower Gullet, Aspull. In 1891 he was living at 93 Lower Gullet in Aspull with his widowed mother. In 1893 he married Ann Simm in the Wigan RD in 1893. In 1911 he was living at 489 Bolton Road, Aspull, and working as an underground fireman in a colliery.
