Walter Eke was born in Norwich in 1871 and was the son of James Eke (1849) and Matilda. In 1881 he was living at 4 Dolman Square, Great Yarmouth. In 1891 he was working as a farrier and was living in Mill Lane, Gorleston. He married Elizabeth Phillippo in 1899 in Norwich. In 1901 he was running a market gardening business in Gorleston, where he was living at 104 Beccles Road.
