John Broughton was the son of James Broughton (1834) and Sarah Ann Potter and was born in Edgefield in 1863. In 1871 he was living in Green Road, Edgefield, and was at school. In 1881 he was working as a blacksmith in Holt. He married a woman from Baconsthorpe called Elizabeth around 1891, and they were living in Fish Hill, Holt. In 1901 he was working in Holt Road, Letheringsett as a blacksmith. In 1911 he was living at the Farm Office, Letheringsett Road, Holt, and working as a blacksmith.
