George Broughton was born on 20th March 1818 at Edgefield and christened there on the same day. He was the son of John Broughton (1768) and Ann Bugg. He married Amelia Pegg at Edgefield on 7th July 1854 and they had at least one daughter. In March 1855 he was in Canada and he had remarried by 21st December 1868.
