James Winward was born around 1888 in Westhoughton and was the son of James Taylor Winward and Mary. He was the grandson of James Winward (1822). In 1891 he was aged 3 and was living at 168 Bolton Road, Westhoughton. In 1901 he was aged 13, was working as a dyer's labourer and was living at 63 Park Road, Westhoughton. In 1911 he was living at 2 Clough Fold, Westhoughton, and working as a pit waggon repairer in a colliery.
