James Winward was the son of Samuel Winward (1852) and Emma Mangnall. In 1891 he was living at 27 Grundy Street, Westhoughton. In 1901 he was working as a coal miner hewer and living at 6 Leigh Common, Westhoughton. In 1911 he was working as a miner and living with his mother and brother Ernest at 8 Gerrard Street, Bolton.
