Thomas Boland was born in 1831, in County Kildare in Ireland and baptised a Roman Catholic on 25th December 1831 in Naas, where his family was living in Corban’s Lane. He married a woman called Ann Gilligan in Allenwood, Co. Kildare on 7th April 1856. He was living in Cuckney, Nottinghamshire, in 1859 and was a farm labourer. In 1861 he was living at 48 Newgate Street, Worksop. There is no trace of the Boland family in 1871 and they may well have moved back to Ireland. He became a bricklayer and was dead by 1897.
