Brenda Montague’s data. Walter Ainscough was born Jan.22/1891 in Blackrod. Walter married Clara Arkwright, adopted daughter of the Ashton family of Ince on May 18, 1918 at Hindley Unitarian Church. Walter and Clara lived in an old row house behind the Victoria Pub at the corner of Atherton Road and Long Lane in Hindley Green. The houses were torn down (pre 1954) and they moved round the corner to 25 Cinnamon Avenue, Hindley Green. (Walter's mother, Dinah Ainscough, smoked a clay pipe and apparently wouldn't let her grandchildren into her house - they had to stand on a mat just inside the kitchen door.) Walter worked as an above-ground labourer at a coal mine and later in life I believe he worked at the paintworks down Platt Lane in Hindley. Walter died in Billinge Hospital in March 1975, after having his leg removed. He had "dry-gangrene" and his leg was all black and scaly. • 4. 1911 Census. 176 Atherton Road, Hindley.
