Herbert Ainscough was born around 1893 in Westhoughton and was the son of John W Ainscough (b. 1865) and Dinah Dickinson. In 1901 and 1911 he was living at 176 Atherton Road in Hindley. In 1911 he was working as a colliery labourer below ground.
