Samuel
Winward was born on 26th July 1852 at the White Horse, Westhoughton
and was the son of James Winward (1822) and Mary Taylor. He was aged
8, was working as silk picker and was living in Chapel Lane, Westhoughton,
in 1861. By 1871 he had become a coal miner and was still living at
Chapel Lane. He was a collier when he married Emma Mangnall at St
Bartholomew's, Westhoughton, on 24th April 1876. In 1881 he was aged
28, was working as a coal miner and was living at 37 Grundy Street,
Westhoughton. In 1891 he was aged 39, was working as a coal miner
and was living at 27 Grundy Street. In 1901 he was aged 48, a coal
miner and living at 6 Leigh Common. He was killed on 9th July 1903
while working as a labourer in a boiler works. He was then living
at 10 Leigh Common.
