James Winward was born around 1884 in Westhoughton and was the son
of Samuel Winward (1852) and Emma Mangnall. In 1891 he was aged 7,
was at school and was living at 27 Grundy Street, Westhoughton. In
1901 he was aged 17, was working as a coal miner hewer and living
at 6 Leigh Common, Westhoughton.
