John Winward was born in Westhoughton in 1880 and was the son of John Winward (1848) and Ann Mangnall. In 1881 he was aged 4 months, and was living at 204 Church Street, Westhoughton. In 1891 he was aged 10 and was living at 2 Lime or Lane Street, Westhoughton. In 1901 he was aged 20, was working as a metal grill machinist, and was living at 4 Derwent Road, Bolton.
