My
great-grandfather, Edmund Pomfrey, became a postman - or "letter-carrier"
- in Lowestoft in 1871. He retired in 1901 - well before this
photograph was taken. However, it gives an idea of the uniform
and the style of the postal delivery in an urban area of the
period. Edmund's retirement pension was the vast sum of £37.2s.7d
per annum... |
