The Broughton Letters 1837-1890
Letter 7: 10th January 1854 - from Ellen Read

Norwich, Jan 10th, 1854

We again write in hopes to receive an answer from you. We wonder we have not had a letter from you since the death of poor grandfather. Grandmother is still living and would like to hear once more, [before] she leaves this world, of you and your family as she thinks her time is short here. She is still living at the old house at Frettenham with uncle Charles. He is married and has two children. Aunt Hannah is married and is living at Heacham near Lynn. Your uncle Richard is in Suffolk. Uncle Henry and uncle Christmas are all dead. The rest of your family are living and in good health. they all send their kind loves to you and your family. Aunt Charlotte is married and is living in Hockering. Aunt Susan is as housekeeper at Mr. Tooley's[1] at Frettenham. Dear aunt we hope you will write to let us know if you are living, as grandmother feels so anxious to hear from you before she leaves this world. If you are not able to write yourself we hope some part of the family will write. Mama's [and] papa's brothers and sisters all send their kind love to you all.

I must conclude with kind love [unknown] believe me to be

Your affectionate niece Ellen Read[2]
