| Charles Holding was the son of William Holding (1837) and Mary and was born in Hindley in 1861. In 1871 he was living in Ladies Lane, Hindley. In 1881 he was living in the household of his grandfather James at 9 Elliott Street in Hindley, and working as apprentice to a mechanical draughtsman.
