BLACKSMITHS & FORGE 1857

Picture from Getty Hulton Archive
My great-grandfather, Raymond Broughton, was a blacksmith like his father before him and his older brother, Joshua. John Broughton - the father of Joshua and Raymond - learnt his trade from his older brother Robert in the Norfolk village of Edgefield. In 1838 he moved to Spixworth, just north of Norwich, married the blacksmith's daughter, Mary Catherine Coe, and ran the forge until the 1860s. Spixworth was a quiet estate owned by the Longe family, with little in the way of progress made, and this picture of a country forge in 1857 gives some idea of what life might have been like.
