Eke was the son of John Eke (1808) and Susannah Scott and was born
, probably in Guestwick, in 1836. In 1841 he was living on the Green
Guestwick. In 1851 he was living in Guestwick and working as an agricultural labourer. In 1871 he was living in the household of his elder brother William Eke (1829) in Bedlington, near Morpeth in Northumberland, and working in a coal mine.
