WILLIAM
BROUGHTON (1815 - 1900)

| William
Broughton was born in 1815 and christened at Plumstead on 31st October
1815. He was the son of John Broughton (1768) and Ann Bugg. In 1841
he was living with his mother and brother William on The Green, Edgefield,
and working as an agricultural labourer. He married Rebecca Dagless
at Edgefield on 15th August 1845. Three of their known children died
as infants and are buried at Edgefield. In 1851 he was working as
an agricultural labourer and lived in The Street, Edgefield. He was
the same William Broughton who was the landlord of the White Horse
in Edgefield from 1856 to 1869. In 1861 he was described a an "Innkeeper
& Labourer". In 1871 he was working as a labourer and living
in Ramsgate Street in Edgefield. He was back in The Street and labouring
in 1881. By 1891 he was widowed and working as a herring seller. He
was then living at The Hill, Edgefield. He died in 1900 and was buried
on 22nd February. William wrote several letters to his elder brother,
Edward, in Canada. |
