George Broughton followed his father, Joshua Broughton, into
the coach smith trade. This was carried on at 8 Wright's Yard
- one of the many yards or "lokes" off Ber Street
in Norwich. Judging by Sydney's clothes, the business looked
to be prospering. Sydney's wife - Hannah - was the daughter
of a Heigham butcher called William Loveday. There is some speculation
that Sydney and Hannah may have met while the butcher's cart
was being "fettled" by the Broughtons' business in
Wright's Yard. All pure guesswork, of course, but a nice, romantic
story all the same... |
