LEMUEL
CHARLES BROUGHTON (1878 - 1953) |

Charlie
Broughton 1927 |
Charlie
Broughton was my mother's father and undoubtedly quite a character.
He was fascinated by the sea and would return to it whenever
possible - often at short notice and leaving his wife and family
at the drop of a hat. In 1891 he worked as a rigging sorter
in a ropeyard in Beccles and, by 1901, was an Able Seaman. He
worked on the collier brig "Mary Stowe" out of Yarmouth
and in various other seafaring capacities over the years - though
his profession on official documents was always given as "engineer".
He joined the RAMC in 1914 and served until 1918. In his last
sea years, he worked as a summer steward on board the yacht
of a titled lady from Lowestoft - the wife of a vicar During
the winter he worked as a packer in the fish market. When I
visited my grandparents' home in Lowestoft in the years after
World War 2, Grandad Broughton would walk with me round the
crowded Lowestoft docks, chatting to all the fishermen as they
unloaded their catch. |
