Lemuel Charles Broughton was born on 30th January 1878 at 6 Sturdy
Road in Peckham Rye. He was the son of Raymond Broughton (b. 1842)
and Louisa Garrould. The family was probably living at 10 Galatea
Terrace, Athens Road in Peckham. In 1881 he was aged 3 and living
in New Road in Beccles. In 1891 he was aged 13 and working as a rigging
sorter in Beccles. He was living with his parents in Ingate Street.
In 1901 he was aged 23 and was a seaman on the ship Balmyle anchored
at Great Yarmouth's South Quay. He married Daisy Pomfrey on 4th May
1903 at Lowestoft Register Office in 43 St Peter's Street. He was
living at 1 Laundry Lane and working as an engine fitter. He sailed
on HMHS Britannic and served as medical orderly in the first World
War at Gallipoli, in Mesopotamia and in India. Lemuel - known as Charles
to his family - lived at 14 Walton Road in Lowestoft from around 1920
until his death from a heart attack on 8th June 1953. He was variously
a sailor, engineer and packer in the fish market. He was buried on
11th June 1953 in plot 27/453 in Lowestoft Cemetery.
