EDWARD
BROUGHTON (1805 - 1893) |

Edward
Broughton c1890 |
Like
many early 19th century East Anglians with no prospects on the
land, Edward Broughton emigrated to Canada in 1837 after marrying
Elizabeth Remmington from Frettenham. He and Elizabeth raised
at least six children in the township of Blenheim in the district
of North Oxford in Ontario. Blenheim is not far from Toronto
and is situated on the border with the USA. This photograph
of Edward was made available through the courtesy of Adrian
Hennessey and his website. Transcripts of letters to Edward
from his younger brother William Broughton in Edgefield - and
from his brother-in-law, William Remington - provide a fascinating
insight into the rural life of the mid-18th century. From various
records, Edward appears to have been a devout Methodist and
well respected, albeit strict, member of the Blenheim community.
His obituary in a local Canadian paper says that he was born
in "Aitchville" in England - evidently the local pronunciation
of Edgefield! |
