Walter Ainscough was born around 1891 in Westhoughton and was the son of John William Ainscough (b. 1865) and Dinah Dickinson. He was the grandson of James Ainscough (b. 1843) and the great-grandson of William Ainscough (b. 1816). In 1891 he was aged 1 and was living at 646 Chorley Road, Westhoughton. In 1901 he was aged 10 and living at 176 Atherton Road in Hindley.
