RALPH AINSCOUGH (1899 - 1967)

Ralph Ainscough 1914
This is a portrait of Ralph Ainscough, my grandfather. I guess he was probably about fifteen when this photograph was taken. I knew him as a middle-aged, bespectacled man who liked his pipe and a quiet life after his working day as a fitter. He was a lifelong and staunch member of the St. John's Ambulance Brigade and the Royal and Ancient Order of Buffalos, and I remember him going off to "the Buffs" evenings at "The Crown" at the top of Crown Lane in Horwich. He mended many a cut and scrape by the liberal application of iodine and bandages - and how the iodine stung! His other pastime was playing 78" rpm records of light classics and Peter Dawson songs on the wind-up gramophone in the corner of the front room. However, that was posh, and most evenings were spent by the back kitchen range with his pipe, the "wireless" and the local paper.
