Mary Ainscough was born around 1880 in Aspull and was the daughter of Charles Ainscough (b. 1848) and Miriam O'Hara. She was the granddaughter of William Ainscough (b. 1816). In 1881 she was aged 1 and living at 61 Scot Lane, Aspull. In 1891 she was aged 11, was at school and was living at 17 Holly Street, Aspull.
