Herbert Ainscough was born around 1893 in Hindley and was the son of John W Ainscough (b. 1865) and Dinah Dickinson. He was the grandson of James Ainscough (b. 1843) and the great-grandson of William born in 1816. In 1901 he was aged 8 and was living at 176 Atherton Road in Hindley.
