GEORGE AINSCOUGH (1870 - 1952)

George Ainscough 1916
My great-grandfather, George Ainscough. A family portrait taken in 1946 shows four generations of the Ainscoughs - myself, father John, grandfather Ralph and great-grandfather George. I can't recall him myself. According to the family, he was a bit of a "lad" when young, but a quiet authoritative man in later life. George was born in Aspull in Lancashire but moved with his parents to Westhoughton shortly after that. He met and married Mary Ellen Winward in Westhoughton and then moved to Horwich where - except for a brief spell in retirement at Lostock - he lived for the rest of his life. George worke first as a locomotive stoker and then as an engine driver, driving - among others - engines in the "Royal Scot" class.
