THE 'ROYAL SCOT' 1933

My great-grandfather, George Ainscough, started working as a locomotive fireman on the London & North Western Railway, and then became an engine driver. He was one of the drivers of the world-famous locomotive the 'Royal Scot' - shown here on tour in the USA in 1933. He drove it from Crewe to Euston on one shift and then back to Crewe the following day. He would then drive it from Crewe to Carlisle and back to Crewe the next day. He finished his working day by taking the train from Crewe home to Horwich, near Bolton! He retired from the main line and worked in the Horwich locomotive works as a shunting engine driver. His party piece was to crack a walnut shell between the train and platform buffers - leaving the nut whole.
