The English dance music transcriptions listed here are based on a collection of tunes compiled by Andy Warburton and other participants in the Lewes Favourites English Tunes Practice Session and known as 'The Lewes Favourites'. The tunes - illustrated with dance notations from Sussex manuscripts, anecdotes, photographs of the habitats where they flourish and an index of the combinations in which they are often played - are available in book form. The price for the book is £10; it is available from the Lewes Arms Folk Club, and the ordering details are given here. The tunes are also available in various computerised formats.
The purpose of this website is to give additional transcriptions of the tunes. So far, they have been transcribed, with the permission of the Lewes Arms Folk Club, for tenor banjo in standard C-G-D-A tuning, and mandolin in standard G-D-A-E tuning. The tunes have been organised into 7 separate pages or volumes, following the pattern of the original collection. Each page lists the tunes in that volume, and clicking on a tune title displays the transcription for that tune. Each transcription contains the original musical score and tenor banjo tablature. I have not yet transcribed the supplement or the extra Scan Tester volume - future projects.
