WHY
Edward Broughton, the son of John Broughton (b.1768) and Ann Bugg (b.1778), was born in Edgefield, Norfolk, in 1805. He married Elizabeth Remmington, the daughter of William and Christian Remmington, in Frettenham in 1830. In 1836, Edward and Elizabeth emigrated to Canada, settling near Toronto. There they raised 6 children and became successful farmers. Between 1837 and 1890, various Broughton and Remmington relations in Norfolk wrote to the Broughtons in Canada. Some of their letters - 34 in all - were discovered and copied as typescripts. This website contains the typescripts, together with "translations" which add punctuation, regularise the spelling and attempt to clarify one or two unclear passages.
