The official government censuses, which have been conducted every ten years since 1841, have provided me with invaluable information about the village. The censuses for Henfield and Woodmancote from 1841 to 1891 have been transcribed by Marion Woolgar and are available in ring-binders in the Henfield Museum. The 1881 and 1901 censuses are available online - click for my take on the 1881 census.

Trade directories and gazetteers are also invaluable cources of information about a locality, often giving individuals and their addresses. The University of Leicester has created a very useful directory database - well worth a look at http://www.historicaldirectories.org.
