ELIZABETH REMINGTON (1809 - ?)
Elizabeth Remmington (1809)
Elizabeth Remington c1890
Elizabeth Remmington of Frettenham married Edward Broughton of Edgefield on 14th December 1830 and emigrated with him to Ontario in the 1830s. Elizabeth was the brother of William Remmington and his wife Christain, and William wrote many letters to her and her husband from Frettenham. The village of Frettenham is further south than Edgefield - closer to Spixworth, where John Broughton had the forge from 1838 to the 1850s. There were various links between Edgefield and the district of St Faiths in which both Frettenham and Spixworth are situated - the Remmington and Coe families being two of them. Elizabeth must have been a tough lady to raise six children from nothing in early 19th century Canada. Note the size of her hands in the photograph on the left - although obviously arthritic by the time the picture was taken, they must have been pretty powerful when Elizabeth was in her prime.
