Joseph Holding was the son of John Holding (1830) and Mary Coman and was born in Standish in 1862. In 1881 he was working as a coal miner and living at 7 Longfield Street in Aspull. In 1891 he was living at the Fair Trade Inn, 13 Wigan Road, Aspull, and was working as a general servant and barman in his father’s public house.
