Frederick James Houchen was the son of George Houchen (1835) and Ellen Maria Semmence, and was born in Hingham in 1867. In 1871 he was living in Hingham with his parents. In 1881 he was living with his uncle, John Houchen, at 102 Gladstone Street, Heigham. He was working as a shop messenger. In 1891 he was working as a tailor and living with his uncle John and aunt Lydia at 38 Gladstone Street.
