John Ainscough was the son of Benjamin Ainscough (1871) and Mary Alice WoolleyIn 1901 he was living at 198 Newton Road, St. Helens. In 1911 he was living at 50 Ringley Fold, Stoneclough, near Manchester, and working as a coalminer.
