John Eke was born in East Dereham in 1860 and was the son of John Eke (1820) and Martha Cottrill. In 1861 he was living in Wellington Road, East Dereham. In 1881 he was living in Theatre Street, East Dereham and working as a grocer’s porter. In 1891 he was living at Mill Hill Place in Marylebone and working as a draper’s porter. He married Louisa Agnes Mayhew in 1895. In 1901 he was working as a night watchman and living at 9 Little Marylebone Street.
