George Coop was born in Sheffield in 1876 and was the son of Josiah Coop (1851) and either Mary Gillatt or Sarah Rhodes. In 1881 he was living as the grandson of Henry Gillatt and possibly the son of Mary Coop, née Gillatt, at 60 Cecil Road in Eccleshall. In 1891 he was living with Josiah and Sarah as their son at 99 Bramber Street in the Brightside Bierlow area of Sheffield. In 1901 he was with his parents at 6 Avondale Road in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield.
