William Ainscough was born around 1878 in Aspull and was the son of Charles Ainscough (1848) and Miriam O'Hara. In 1881 he was aged 3 and living at 61 Scot Lane in Aspull. In 1891 he was aged 13, was working as a drawer in a coal mine and was living at 17 Holly Street, Aspull. He married a woman called Elizabeth Helen Ellis in 1900 at the same time that their daughter Annie was born. In 1901 he was aged 23, working as a coal miner and living at 7 Back Sydney Street, Pemberton. Elizabeth Ellis had died before 1910. He married a woman called Sarah in 1910 or 1911 and, in 1911, was a coal miner hewer and living at 6 Back Sidney Street in Pemberton.
