Martha Ainscough was born around 1875 in Blackrod and was the daughter of William Ainscough (1845) and Jane. In 1881 she was aged 6, was at school and was living in Little Scotland, Blackrod. In 1891 she was aged 16, was working as a cotton spinner and was living at 23 Hill Lane, Blackrod. She probably married John Brown (1874) a Blackrod miner, in late 1898. In 1901 she was living in Wigan.
